Birmingham international airport is the seventh busiest UK airport with a throughput of over 10.1 million passengers in 2015. First opening in 1939, it was owned by the city council as a municipal airport and designed to meet the needs of the local residents and the industry of Birmingham city and the surrounding areas. The airport currently serves more than 140 direct scheduled and charter routes and also offers an additional 280 possible connections worldwide. Approximately 50 airlines operate from Birmingham, including daily flights to New York, Dubai and Istanbul. The most popular routes include Delhi, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris. Birmingham airport is an operating base for Monarch, Ryanair, Flybe, Thomas Cook and Thomson Airways. From March 2017 the airport will be a base for Jet2.com. The airport has superb road and rail links, great facilities and there is ongoing improvement and development.
